Roll 4d6 Drop Lowest

The standard D&D 5e ability score method

your score

Four six-sided dice, drop the lowest, sum the rest — the standard ability score method in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition and Pathfinder. It's kinder than 3d6: the average score is 12.24, and scores of 13+ show up more than half the time, so your heroes actually feel heroic.

How to roll a 5e character

  1. Leave the count set to 6 — you need six ability scores.
  2. Tap ROLL STATS. Four dice are rolled six times; the lowest die from each set is dropped.
  3. Each of the six totals becomes an ability score.
  4. Assign them (in order, or freely if your DM allows) to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma.
  5. Apply racial bonuses per your chosen species.

Is it a good roll?

A useful rule of thumb: the sum of all six scores should be at least 70 to be competitive. Under 65 is rough; over 80 is notably above average. Most DMs let you reroll once if the total is below a set minimum — ask before you start.

Other dice rollers

Try 3d6 (classic stats), 2d6, d100, d10, d20, or the full Dice Roller.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the average 4d6 drop lowest?

12.24. Modal value is 13. An 18 appears about 1.6% of the time per roll, so expect roughly one 18 every ten characters on average.

Can I see all four dice, not just the total?

Yes. After each roll, the dropped die and kept dice are shown below the score so you can verify the math.

Does this follow the 5e Player's Handbook rules?

Yes. This is the "Rolling Scores" method from the 5e PHB character creation chapter. Your DM may allow rerolls or use point-buy instead.
